More than a year after construction began on the Mexico City-Querétaro train, only three local companies are participating in the project as subcontractors, revealed Álvaro Ugalde, president of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) in Querétaro.
The industry representative explained that currently only three companies specializing in machinery rental are collaborating on the project, clarifying that this is not direct participation like the kind the construction sector requested before the railway work began.
“It’s a federal bidding process, managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation. Only three machinery rental companies in the state of Querétaro are currently subcontracted,” he said.
Ugalde Chaparro pointed out that CMIC members have a base of more than 67,000 construction workers in Querétaro, none of whom have yet benefited from the federal megaproject.
It’s worth noting that the project’s execution began on April 27th of last year, under the direction of the “Felipe Ángeles” Engineering Group of the National Defense Secretariat. However, although there are currently at least 14 active work fronts, none involve construction companies from Querétaro.
Last Friday, state authorities held a meeting with the group’s leader, Gustavo Vallejo, where they reviewed the train’s progress. There, the Secretary of Government, Eric Gudiño, requested information on the start of construction of the stations in El Marqués and Querétaro City, with the aim of preventing disruptions to traffic.
He also requested details on the packages of complementary works requested around the stations, primarily to reduce traffic congestion on State Highway 200, near Jesús María, as well as in the Alcanfores Park area.
According to the latest report from the Felipe Ángeles Engineers Association, the Mexico City-Querétaro train project is 9.8% complete in terms of construction and 60% complete in terms of right-of-way acquisition. The project is scheduled for completion in September 2027.
