After months of construction, upgrades, and modernization, the Mexico City Light Rail (LRT) is now operating again at all its stations with new trains. N+ shares a look at “El Ajolote” (The Axolotl).

With these changes, local authorities promise to reduce wait times and improve mobility to the south of the capital.

The new trains have double cabs and a capacity to carry up to 375 passengers, including seated and standing passengers. They can also operate coupled together, allowing up to 750 passengers per train.

Among the key features are universal accessibility systems, interior and exterior video surveillance cameras, security announcements, and regenerative braking technology to harness the energy produced during braking.

As part of the modernization, work was also carried out at various stations along the route. The Tasqueña terminal was expanded and now has three platforms for simultaneous operations.

In addition, stations such as Huipulco, Xomali, Periférico, La Noria, and Huichapan were remodeled to allow for the operation of coupled trains.

At the same time, major maintenance work was carried out at stations such as Estadio Azteca, La Virgen, Ciudad Jardín, Nezahualpilli, El Vergel, and Xochimilco.
