Sam Smith said goodbye to Mexico with a visit to a classic cantina in the capital. After following the recommendation of one of his followers, the English singer went to the establishment to try different traditional dishes and was pleasantly surprised when he tasted chile en nogada.
After the four concerts the singer performed at the Auditorio Nacional on August 17, 18, 20, and 21, Sam was not content simply to fulfill his scheduled dates and return to his hometown of London. Instead, he remained in Mexico City to explore it and get to know it more deeply, especially its food.
In recent days, the performer of “Unholy” has shared on his food blog, “Sam Served,” some of the places he visited during his stay in the capital. His most recent experience was at a cantina, which he discovered thanks to the positive comments one of his fans made about the establishment.
The place is Cantina del Bosque, located in San Miguel Chapultepec. Excited and wearing a T-shirt featuring the Venus of Willendorf, he entered the establishment and chose one of the tables at the back to sample some of the dishes on the menu, stating that he had never visited a place like it before.
Smith did not overlook the fact that most of the diners were very well dressed.
“Never been anywhere like this in Mexico City, everyone dresses so impressively, I just wish I was wearing a dress.”
He also joked about the fact that American football was being broadcast on the cantina’s screens, saying that at that moment he felt like being a heterosexual man who enjoys sports.
The musician accompanied his first dish with a glass of sparkling water and, although Sam did not specify the name of each recipe he tried, all of them came with a considerable portion of sauce.
“So far, these sauces are the most complex and beautiful I’ve ever tasted: they are definitely from Mexico, seriously, I’m enjoying it, my mouth is having a party,” he commented.
After trying the shrimp ceviche, Sam considered that Cantina del Bosque had a homemade flavor, similar to something that would come from a grandmother’s kitchen.
Another dish he particularly enjoyed was chorizo with melted cheese, two of his favorite ingredients “in the world,” and he acknowledged that the restaurant did not hold back when it came to the amount of cheese.
But without a doubt, the dish he enjoyed the most and that dazzled him the most was chile en nogada, a classic of the season. Because of its colors and presentation, the English singer admitted that he had certain expectations about the flavor he was going to encounter.
“I’m intrigued. It could taste really good, it could taste bad, so let’s try it… delicious!”
He also praised the excellent service he received, personally thanking one of the waiters serving his table. He then recommended the place to his Mexican fans.
“It’s a memory I’ll carry with me forever. I’ll come here every time I visit Mexico City.”
And although the dish that caught his attention the most was chile en nogada, the flavor that delighted him the most was meat with sauce.
