In Nuevo León, they also reject Mario Delgado’s measure: Samuel García announces the end date for the 2025-2026 school year.

Mario Delgado, head of the Ministry of Public Education (SEP), remains at the center of controversy for the decision to modify the 2025-2026 school calendar. The federal agency, along with state education authorities, reportedly decided to end classes on June 5th, citing the “heat wave” and the start of the 2026 World Cup.

In response to this decision, Samuel García, governor of Nuevo León, explained on his social media that the measure “represents a complication for their daily routine because they hadn’t planned for it, but above all, a limitation to the educational development of their children.”

He specified that due to previous modifications to the start of the school year, classes in the state will end on June 19th. Furthermore, from June 22nd to July 8th, workshops and “sports camps” will be held so that children who need them can attend school during that period.

The plan put forward by the governor of Nuevo León has generated negative comments, between those who agree that the school year should end on June 5th and those who prefer June 30th:

“My dear governor, with all due respect, what difference will one week or two weeks make to the learning of students in public schools, if many of us teach them more at home than at school? Personally, I want my child on vacation already.”

“You see schools as daycare centers. Your view of Nuevo León’s teachers is deplorable. Don’t have a school break if you want; we’re not afraid of work. But the world will find out about your disastrous performance as governor during the World Cup matches.”

“What a disappointment to feel that our work as teachers is being reduced to ‘babysitting.’ We study, we prepare, and we teach with vocation. We are not responsible for the lack of commitment of some parents.”

In a statement released on May 7, it was confirmed that “Mario Delgado Carrillo and the 32 education authorities agreed that the end of the school year will be brought forward to June 5.”

The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) stipulates that administrative closing procedures will conclude on June 12, and the School Technical Council (CTE) meeting, originally scheduled for May 29, will be rescheduled for June 8.

The school break will end on August 10, and “to avoid compromising the development of the curriculum and study programs, two official weeks dedicated to reinforcing learning will be held from August 17 to 28.”

Therefore, the 2026-2027 school year would begin on August 31. Although Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated in a press conference that the decision is not final, Mario Delgado reiterated that the current school year will conclude on June 5.
