Tourism investment and coffee with designation of origin boost the economy in Nayarit

Nayarit’s economy is receiving a significant boost with the attraction of billions of dollars in planned tourism investment and the official recognition of the Designation of Origin (DO) for its coffee. The state has solidified its position as second in the nation for tourism investment, attracting $8.192 billion earmarked for 24 strategic projects that promise to transform the local economic landscape. This announcement was made by the Secretary of Tourism of the Mexican Government, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, and ratified by Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero, who highlighted the growing investor confidence in the state.

In a further achievement that underscores the region’s productive wealth, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) granted the Designation of Origin to “Café Nayarit.” This recognition elevates Nayarit to the distinction of being a state with three designations of origin, adding to the existing ones for tequila and raicilla. The ceremony, attended by the Director General of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Santiago Nieto Castillo, included a coffee masterclass that brought together more than a thousand people, setting a Guinness World Record and demonstrating the deep-rooted cultural and economic importance of coffee for the more than 2,300 producers in municipalities such as Ruiz, Xalisco, Compostela, San Blas, Tepic, and Jala.

This regional optimism contrasts with some national economic indicators. General inflation in Mexico moderated to 4.45 percent annually in April, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). However, the cost of basic goods remains a concern, as the prices of essential products such as tomatoes, chili peppers, and potatoes have increased at approximately twice the rate of general inflation, primarily affecting the most vulnerable populations. Furthermore, industrial activity in Mexico registered a drop of 0.6 percent in March and an accumulated decline of 1.2 percent in the first quarter of 2026, marking three consecutive years of declines in this period.
