The Mexican Pacific is expecting up to 21 hurricanes this season

This hurricane season, the Mexican Pacific is expected to experience between 18 and 21 storms, of which at least five could reach Category 5, according to the forecast from the National Meteorological Service of the National Water Commission.

The official forecast also states that, during the hurricane season, between nine and ten storms will reach tropical storm strength, and between five and six will develop into Category 1 or 2 hurricanes.

Authorities at the National Center for Disaster Prevention have recommended that the general public locate temporary shelters, prepare an emergency kit with important documents, bottled water, non-perishable food, a radio, a flashlight, and a first-aid kit, and keep rooftops, gutters, and drains clean to reduce risks during hurricane season.

The federal agency urged the public to stay informed only through official announcements from the National Meteorological Service and Civil Protection.

Mazatlán remains among the coastal areas under special monitoring due to its Pacific location and the history of hurricane and storm damage in previous years. State and federal authorities indicated that the months with the highest activity are typically between August and October, when the likelihood of hurricane formation and intensification along the Mexican coast increases.

The National Meteorological Service also stated that Pacific Ocean conditions will continue to be monitored due to the potential transition to the El Niño climate phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs when the surface temperature of the equatorial Pacific Ocean remains above average for several months, which could alter weather patterns and favor more intense hurricanes in the eastern Pacific.
