The 2026 National Drug Strategy, released last week, confirmed that the Trump administration identifies Mexico as a source country for drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl.
“The nearly 2,000-mile land border with Mexico remains the primary corridor for illicit drugs that pose the most serious threat to American lives,” the document states.
Mexico is the primary entry point for fentanyl into the United States, according to data from Customs and Border Protection.
Between 95 and 98 percent of the fentanyl seized in the last three fiscal years entered through the shared border with Mexico.
The report “How Does Fentanyl Get into the United States?”, prepared by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a U.S. think tank, indicates that Mexico has long been the primary source of fentanyl for the United States.
“Mexico imports large quantities of fentanyl precursor chemicals through illicit networks established by cartels, who then manufacture the drug before smuggling it across the border into the United States,” the analysis states.
The document explains that fentanyl’s potency facilitates its cross-border smuggling undetected, compared to other drugs, since traffickers only need to transport small amounts.
