The Riviera Maya, particularly the city of Playa del Carmen, has experienced a series of power outages in recent days, affecting both local businesses and residents, who have expressed their discontent on social media. The most recent outage occurred on the night of Thursday, May 14, according to a report from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
According to a statement from the CFE announcing the restoration of service, the outage also affected other areas in southeastern Mexico, including Mérida, Yucatán; Cancún, Quintana Roo; Reforma, Chiapas; and several towns in Tabasco. This particular outage lasted approximately 50 minutes (between 10 and 11 p.m., Quintana Roo time).
However, according to reports from citizens on social media, this is just one of the many power outages that have occurred in recent days. A power outage on May 4th affected more than 285,000 people in the Riviera Maya, including Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
The outages have been frequent, primarily in the western part of the city, in residential developments such as Real Ibiza, Selvanova, Punta Estrella, Cataluña, Las Palmas, Marsella, Tumben Chilam, and Villas del Sol, as well as neighborhoods like Misión del Carmen, Ejidal, Galaxias, and Bellavista. Residents report periods of up to 12 hours without power, with the resulting impact on their finances, as many household appliances are damaged.
Earlier this week, the Secretary General of the Playa del Carmen City Council, Luis Herrera, reported that the outages in various neighborhoods were related to overloads and technical problems stemming from increased electricity consumption. Since this is a federal issue, the municipality continues its discussions with the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to prevent further disruptions.
