Following the accidents that have occurred on Federal Highway 180 in Carmen, authorities are being urged to conduct rapid tests on heavy-duty vehicle drivers, as well as checks to prevent them from driving while impaired, said Julio Valencia Cruz, secretary of the Citizen Oversight Organization, A.C.
He added that on the Ciudad del Carmen-Sabancuy stretch, it is very common to see heavy vehicles driven by truckers who fail to respect traffic and speed-limit signs.
He stated that many truck drivers tend to rest in Isla Aguada or at the Sabancuy junction, going to eateries where they are allegedly consuming alcoholic beverages and other substances.
“When these drivers wake up, they realize they are behind schedule and get back on the highway like crazy, putting other drivers and their families at risk, because they overtake continuously, on curves, and at excessive speeds.”
He stressed that many of these drivers consume alcohol and other substances, which is why toxicological and breathalyzer checkpoints need to be established for everyone’s safety.
So far this week, three accidents occurred on Monday on Federal Highway 180, along the Isla Aguada-Sabancuy stretch, leaving traffic on this route blocked for more than 12 hours.
“These blockages are the result of accidents occurring in this area due to the lack of inspections and monitoring of the conditions under which these drivers operate, who are irresponsible.”
