Complaints against financial institutions in Yucatán continue to rise. During the first two months of 2016, the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef) registered 1,310 complaints in the state, a 5.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to the agency, 28.2 percent of the complaints were related to potential fraud, primarily due to unrecognized charges in physical stores and online transactions, reflecting the growth of digital financial crimes.

The majority of complaints focused on banking products such as credit cards, debit cards, and personal loans, which accounted for almost 74 percent of cases within the commercial banking sector. This sector alone accounted for more than 60 percent of all complaints filed in the state.

Among the most frequent problems reported by users were unauthorized online charges, unidentified transactions, and difficulties in canceling financial products, issues that comprised more than a third of the complaints handled.

Regarding the institutions with the most complaints, Banamex and BBVA topped the list, followed by Banorte, Banco Azteca, and Santander, banks that concentrate a large part of the financial activity in Yucatán.

By municipality, Mérida accounted for 81 percent of the registered complaints, while Kanasín and Progreso lagged far behind with 2.4 and 1.6 percent, respectively.

Condusef reported that almost 75 percent of the cases were resolved electronically, streamlining communication between users and banks.

Furthermore, just over half of the complaints received a favorable resolution for those affected, allowing for the recovery of approximately 7 million pesos.

Regarding gender distribution, 55 percent of the complaints were filed by men and 45 percent by women. In the case of senior citizens, the main complaints were related to bank cards and special credit reports.

Given this situation, Condusef urged the public to use official channels for assistance and reporting to report irregularities and protect their assets against possible abuses or financial fraud.
