Clinics of Horror: Shoddy Treatments End in Deaths in Puebla and Sonora

65

Over the past two months, two cases have come to light in Mexico in which the administration of alleged medical treatments has proven fatal. In early April, the administration of “vitamin-enriched IV drips” in the state of Sonora—linked to the deaths of eight people—shocked the nation; meanwhile, this week, the death of Blanca Vázquez in Puebla, following a visit to an alleged aesthetic clinic, has sparked public outrage. Here is how these tragedies unfolded.

The ‘Vitamin-Enriched IV Drips’ Linked to the Deaths of 8 People
At the Medicina Biológica Regenerativa Celular (Cellular Regenerative Biological Medicine) clinic in Sonora, eight people who received a “vitamin-enriched IV drip” died in early April. The administration of this substance has been attributed to Dr. Jesús Maximiano “N,” who is currently being sought by authorities.

The doctor offered “cutting-edge, non-invasive” treatments, primarily for conditions related to metabolism and obesity. Additionally, he prescribed both homeopathic and allopathic (conventional) medications.

The vitamin-enriched IV drip was supposedly intended to help patients boost their energy levels, alleviate stress, and strengthen their immune systems.

However, the victims who received the substance presented a range of symptoms—including vomiting, hemorrhaging, and multiple organ failure—that ultimately resulted in their deaths.

The Death of Blanca Vázquez After Disappearing at an Aesthetic Clinic
Blanca Adriana Vázquez Montiel, 37, was reported missing on May 18 after visiting the Detox clinic—located on Calzada Zavaleta in the city of Puebla—to undergo an aesthetic procedure.

According to statements from family members published in media reports, Blanca went to the clinic accompanied by her husband solely to inquire about an aesthetic treatment; however, she was persuaded to undergo a liposuction procedure using “MicroAire” technology that very same day, for which she was charged 14,000 pesos. During the procedure, the alleged doctor, Diana Palafox, asked the victim’s husband to go out and buy medications, bandages, and other supplies; however, when he returned, the clinic was closed, prompting him to seek assistance from the authorities.

According to a report by Diario Cambio, the Detox clinic—which has since been shut down by authorities—offered not only body treatments but also “vaginal tightening,” therapies for urinary incontinence, the insertion of hormonal implants known as “sex chips,” facial endolifts, and the application of Botox and hyaluronic acid to the lips, in addition to regenerative treatments such as “salmon DNA.”

The Discovery of the Body
On Thursday, May 21, the lifeless body of Blanca Adriana was found in a ditch in the neighboring state of Tlaxcala. “Operational personnel from the municipality of #Atltzayanca reported the discovery of the lifeless body of a female individual in a ditch located in the Santiago neighborhood,” the State Attorney General’s Office announced in a press release.

The family confirmed that the body was indeed Blanca’s. Her mother demanded justice and the apprehension of the alleged perpetrator:

“This person—that so-called doctor—took my daughter’s life. She has children of her own, too, and sooner or later she will suffer everything that I am suffering… I know that, sooner or later, they will pay for everything they did to my daughter. I demand justice, and I call upon the entire community of Puebla and the surrounding areas to help me,” she stated in an interview with the media.

This Friday, Puebla’s State Prosecutor, Idamis Pastor, provided details regarding the case. In an interview with journalist Azucena Uresti, she stated that, based on security camera footage analysis, the perpetrators loaded Blanca into a car—the very vehicle used to transport her to Tlaxcala.

“They took her out of the clinic in that same car, transported her, and dumped her at this location,” the prosecutor recounted. “We found her wearing the same clothes she had on when she arrived at the clinic.”

The prosecutor noted that, as of now, the cause of Vázquez Montiel’s death remains unknown, as the autopsy is still underway.
