US Issues Warning in Mexico Over Videos Encouraging Enlistment in Armed Forces

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has issued new advisories directed at migrants and foreign tourists, following the detection of false information regarding U.S. citizenship processes and ahead of the arrival of thousands of visitors for the 2026 World Cup.

The statement was issued on May 26, when the diplomatic mission responded to videos circulating on social media claiming that joining the U.S. Army is the fastest way to obtain citizenship.

U.S. authorities stated that this claim is incorrect and explained that military service can only influence certain immigration processes, provided that individuals meet specific legal requirements.
Among the requirements cited by the Embassy are holding lawful permanent residence—known as a Green Card—and demonstrating fluent proficiency in the English language, both spoken and written.

“Do not make immigration decisions based on incomplete information,” the U.S. diplomatic mission posted.

What did the U.S. say about enlisting in the Army?

The Embassy clarified that no individual can use the U.S. Army as a means to enter the country or apply for an immigrant visa—contrary to what some viral content suggests.

Furthermore, it reiterated that the naturalization process linked to military service is not available to just any migrant; rather, it depends on compliance with federal eligibility and service regulations.

Separately, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the majority of Mexican migrants seeking to obtain a Green Card will be required to complete their immigration procedures outside of U.S. territory.

This measure will primarily affect individuals currently residing in the United States without valid immigration documents, as they will be required to visit U.S. consulates located in Mexico to finalize the process.
