Geyser captured on camera in a backyard in Michoacán: what it is and how this phenomenon forms

109

A suspected geyser surprised residents of Michoacán after a jet of water and steam erupted from a house’s patio, an event captured on video that quickly went viral on social media. The phenomenon occurred in the municipality of Ciudad Hidalgo, an area known for its geothermal activity and hot springs.

The footage shows the water forcefully shooting from the ground, reaching several meters in height, while neighbors watch the phenomenon in amazement. Local authorities went to inspect the site to rule out any risks to the population.

What is a geyser?

A geyser is a natural source of hot water that periodically expels columns of water and steam due to accumulated pressure underground. This phenomenon occurs when groundwater comes into contact with rocks heated by volcanic or geothermal activity.

For a geyser to form, specific geological conditions are needed: underground heat, water, and a system of conduits beneath the surface that allows pressure to build up.

Experts explain that when water reaches very high temperatures and pressure increases within narrow cavities, it is suddenly released to the surface, generating an eruption of hot water and steam.

Michoacán and its Geothermal Activity

Michoacán is part of a region with significant volcanic activity due to its proximity to the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. Municipalities such as Ciudad Hidalgo, Los Azufres, and surrounding areas have natural geothermal features, including fumaroles and hot springs.

The Los Azufres area is home to one of Mexico’s most important geothermal fields, even used for generating electricity. Therefore, experts believe it is possible that the recorded phenomenon is related to natural hydrothermal activity.

The video shared on social media generated thousands of reactions due to the unusual nature of the phenomenon occurring inside a home. Users compared the event to the famous geysers of Iceland or Yellowstone, although experts point out that studies will be necessary to confirm whether it is indeed a geyser or another type of hydrothermal phenomenon.

So far, no injuries or major damage have been reported as a result of the water jet.

How are geysers formed?

Geysers form when groundwater becomes trapped in deep cavities where geothermal heat is present. As the temperature increases, so does the internal pressure.

When the pressure exceeds a certain limit, the water is violently ejected to the surface along with steam. The system then refills with water, and the cycle can repeat itself.

These types of phenomena are considered rare worldwide because they require very specific geological conditions.
