Members of the fishing sector from different parts of the country marched in Mazatlán to demand that authorities completely close the borders to illegal shrimp.

In their statement regarding this protest, they pointed out that every ton of shrimp destroyed by illegal trade destroys jobs, drives down prices, and ruins Mexican producers.

The demonstration, which is taking place in Mazatlán and heading towards the National Fisheries Commission (Conapesca), was joined by fishing leaders from the aquaculture, deep-sea, coastal, packing, and laboratory sectors. They foresee chaos if the massive influx of thousands of tons of illegal shrimp, which is displacing Mexican production, is not stopped.

They warned of the collapse of the national fishing sector and its entire supply chain due to the last eight years of neglect and the opening of the borders to the smuggling and importation of fresh and cooked shrimp.

They pointed the finger directly at Senasica, Customs, Conapesca, and a network of federal government officials who have allowed this situation to continue, warning that they will only agree to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo or they will intensify their pressure tactics to be heard.

Holding banners, they demanded a solution and denounced a corruption network between officials and companies that is crippling the sector by seizing control of the market.
