In response to the intense rains that have affected much of the state and forecasts predicting continued and even increased rainfall in the coming hours, the Government of Yucatán has decided to suspend all economic activities this Tuesday, June 2nd, throughout the state as a preventative measure to protect the population.
The decision was made during an extraordinary virtual session of the State Emergency Committee, established by the State Civil Protection Council, after evaluating the weather conditions and the effects of the rains in various municipalities of Yucatán.
Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena reported that the measure aims to prevent unnecessary travel and reduce risks for workers, students, and the general public, given that numerous roads are experiencing severe flooding and waterlogging that is hindering mobility.
“We are acting responsibly to safeguard the well-being of Yucatecan families. The current conditions represent a real risk for those who have to travel on roads, streets, and avenues affected by the rains,” the governor stated.
According to information provided by the National Water Commission (Conagua), rainfall could intensify Monday night and continue for the next few hours, a situation that has put state and municipal authorities on alert.
Given this outlook, Díaz Mena called on business owners in Yucatán to join this preventative effort by allowing their employees to stay home and avoid exposure to risky conditions.
“We appeal to the solidarity and social responsibility of the productive sector to support their employees at this time. The priority is to preserve people’s safety,” he stated.
The suspension of economic activities is in addition to the measure previously announced by the State Government’s Ministry of Education (Segey), which suspended classes in all public and private schools in the state, from preschool to higher education.
With this, state authorities seek to significantly reduce traffic on the streets while adverse weather conditions persist.
The governor urged citizens to stay informed exclusively through official channels of the State Government, Civil Protection, and meteorological authorities.
He also recommended avoiding leaving home except in strictly necessary cases, not attempting to cross flooded streets, avenues, roads, or highways, and reporting any emergency situation to the official emergency numbers.
There is particular concern in municipalities where significant water accumulation has been reported, as well as in various sectors of Mérida, where the rains recorded in recent days have caused temporary flooding, traffic disruptions, and service outages.

The state governor emphasized that the Government of Yucatán is working in coordination with the Armed Forces, Civil Protection, the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), the municipalities, and other institutions that comprise the state emergency response system.
He indicated that emergency response teams remain deployed in different regions of the state to address citizen reports, monitor vulnerable areas, and respond immediately to any contingency arising from the storm.
Authorities are closely monitoring the weather system affecting the Yucatán Peninsula and are not ruling out issuing further preventative measures should weather conditions warrant them.
The suspension of economic activities is an unusual measure in Yucatán and comes amid one of the most intense rainfall events recorded in recent years in various parts of the state.
Over the past few days, municipalities in the interior of the state and the capital city have experienced extraordinary rainfall, resulting in flooding, downed trees, road closures, and the mobilization of emergency response teams for relief and prevention efforts.
Given this situation, the state government emphasized that public cooperation will be crucial to reducing risks and preventing more serious incidents.
