U.S. places Colima at “terrorism level” in its travel advisory.

With the start of the FIFA World Cup just a day away, the U.S. Department of State—through the U.S. Embassy in Mexico—issued travel alerts for the country to U.S. citizens. It advised them “not to travel to Colima,” a state placed at Alert Level 4 due to “terrorism” and the “wave of violence” it is experiencing.

On social media, the agency—led by Ronald Johnson—shared a map of Mexico showing the country’s 31 states, each marked with one of four warning levels.

“Mexico is a popular vacation destination, but security risks vary greatly by region, so we assign a travel advisory level to each Mexican state,” the description states.

According to the published map, the U.S. categorizes the country’s states into four risk levels:

Level 1: Exercise normal precautions for the states of Campeche and Yucatán; Level 2: Exercise increased caution for the states of Aguascalientes, Baja California Sur, Mexico City, Coahuila, Durango, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco, and Veracruz.

Level 3: Reconsider travel: Baja California, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, and Sonora.

Level 4: Do not travel: The United States designated Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas.

“If you have secured tickets for a 2026 FIFA World Cup match in Mexico, check the latest travel advisory level,” the U.S. Embassy in Mexico advises.
