The suspension of the President of the Republic’s tour of Zacatecas, after dissident teachers followed her on Saturday while she was in Aguascalientes, was a prudent decision, and dialogue with dissatisfied groups should continue, according to the parliamentary leader of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal.
Speaking from his home state, the congressman said that people in Zacatecas hold the president in high regard and once again expressed his support for her.
In a message posted on social media, accompanied by a video, Monreal Ávila stated that the canceled event would likely be rescheduled soon and that the president would then be able to announce the highway projects that had originally been planned. He admitted that his own visit to Zacatecas was connected to the president’s tour, which ultimately could not take place.
“I was also coming to accompany President Claudia Sheinbaum, who had two visits scheduled to announce the highway plan and continue social programs. But out of prudence—and I think she made the right decision—we must continue the dialogue, remain patient, and recognize that she is a great president who acts with intelligence, calmness, and moderation,” he said.
“Happy Sunday. Greetings from Zacatecas, where I was going to accompany President Claudia Sheinbaum on her tour, which has been postponed for a few weeks. As always, her prudence prevailed, and she prioritized dialogue with all sectors of the population,” the federal legislator wrote on his X account.
Monreal insisted that the president is highly appreciated in Zacatecas and called for support for her amid ongoing demonstrations by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE).
“We must support her. People here in Zacatecas care for her deeply, and whenever she visits, she brings benefits and announces programs that help the people. That is why she is always welcome here. The visit has been postponed and will likely take place in eight days, fifteen days, or three weeks, but our president is doing an excellent job. Stay strong, President!” he added.
Separately, regarding the CNTE protests, Morena Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña also shared his opinion.
He stated that divisions exist within the dissident teachers’ movement, with one faction believing it is time to end the strike and stop demonstrations in Mexico City following the opening of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“The National Coordinator of Education Workers is experiencing an internal debate. Some argue that the majority of teachers voted to end the strike, while the leadership says that, by a very narrow margin, that was not the case. They are maintaining their encampment in Mexico City, although a much smaller delegation will likely return tomorrow compared to the one present before the World Cup,” he said.
Fernández Noroña also criticized what he described as an attempt to disrupt the start of the World Cup, arguing that the effort had failed. He praised the police operations carried out in Mexico City to prevent demonstrators from reaching the opening ceremony venue.
“The truth is that the sabotage attempt failed. Everything went very well. As we have already discussed, President Claudia Sheinbaum is very happy and satisfied. The people, the security operation, and the government all performed well, but above all, the people showed their strength, participation, and love for soccer,” he said during a livestream broadcast on the afternoon of June 14.
