Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed the agreement announced this Monday between the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East, stating that it will contribute to international stability and help lower oil prices—calling it “good news for the world.”

“That is excellent. Let us hope this agreement is actually signed—it is happening this week. Whenever peace is built in the world, we celebrate it,” the president noted during her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum said that following the announcement, the price of oil dropped to around $80 per barrel, which “helps” and is “good news for the world.”

On Sunday night, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the peace agreement, followed by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian authorities.

The agreement, set to be signed next Friday, establishes a sixty-day ceasefire—including in Lebanon—as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of sanctions on Iran, and the resumption of talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program.

“It will provide relief for the economy, ranging from national economies down to personal finances,” Sheinbaum remarked.

She also highlighted that for some countries, the issue was no longer just high oil prices but also access and supply; she noted that “with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, there is once again the possibility of accessing oil, primarily for Asian countries and also for Europe.”

The Strait of Hormuz—through which 20% of the world’s oil flowed prior to the war—had been closed by Iran since the conflict began on February 28; the U.S. responded in mid-April by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports and vessels.
