The Mexican national team has recorded five victories across the last three World Cups, whereas the Spanish team has managed only three wins in those same tournaments.
Spain disappointed in their World Cup debut after a scoreless draw against Cape Verde in a match held at Atlanta Stadium. However, that is not their most concerning statistic; the Spaniards have secured only three victories since winning the title in South Africa in 2010.
In the 11 World Cup matches played since South Africa 2010, Spain has managed just three wins, five draws, and three losses. Even the Mexican national team—often criticized for failing to advance beyond the Round of 16 (the “fifth game”)—has a higher number of victories.
Spain’s only World Cup wins since becoming world champions came against Iran, Australia, and Costa Rica—three teams not ranked among the elite in the FIFA standings.
Mexico Surpasses Spain
Mexico has also played eleven matches, recording five wins, two draws, and four losses. Their victories were against Cameroon, Croatia, Germany, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia.
Their four defeats came against the Netherlands in the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014; against Sweden (group stage) and Brazil (Round of 16) at Russia 2018; and against Argentina at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Spain will seek its fourth victory next Sunday when it faces Saudi Arabia, while Mexico will also have the chance to secure its sixth win against South Korea on Thursday.
