Carlos Alejandro Zetina Cornejo, a judge in Mexico City, was arrested by city police following a report of domestic violence in Coyoacán. The judge was arrested while intoxicated for alleged assault and threats against a family member.
😡To no one’s surprise: he was released.
🗂️His sister withdrew the complaint, the Public Prosecutor’s Office did not bring the case to court, the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal did not open any proceedings, and even his record in the National Registry of Detentions was erased.
👉In other words, the judge has already returned to his duties at the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City.
🚨Zetina was already known as the “Welfare Judge” after going viral for a hearing where he was questioned about his judicial conduct. He was also criticized for saying he would imprison those who criticized his work.
🧐So, who oversees the judges who can decide on people’s freedom, property, and lives?
⚖️The judicial reform promised to bring justice closer to the people, but cases like this raise concerns once again about the profiles of those entering the courts.
😠It’s not enough to say they come “from the people”; they must also be qualified, independent, have sound judgment, and a clean record.
😕And if a judge can be arrested for domestic violence, be released, have their record expunged, and calmly return to judge others, then the problem is a system that is losing its filters.
🤔Is this how they were supposed to dignify justice?
