Via social media, several compatriots traveling from the United States have reported alleged extortion at a checkpoint on Highway 57, just before reaching Matehuala, San Luis Potosí.
According to accounts, demands of up to $1,500 per vehicle are being made; those who refuse are allegedly threatened with having their belongings removed and confiscated. Among those affected are older adults who had already paid the required taxes and fees.
If these allegations are true, the situation is deeply distressing.
Thousands of Mexicans spend years working far from home, sending remittances and sacrificing time with their families. They return hoping to embrace their loved ones, not fearing they might become victims in their own country.
The saddest part is that, for many of our compatriots, the moment of crossing the border no longer brings joy… but anxiety.
The relevant authorities must investigate these reports and clarify the facts.
