The North Port of Matamoros continues to advance as one of the most important infrastructure projects for the economic development of Tamaulipas. With an investment exceeding 190 million pesos in recent works, the state government seeks to consolidate this maritime terminal as a strategic point for commerce, industry, and logistics in the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the Tamaulipas Ministry of Public Works, various works are currently underway to strengthen the port’s operations and improve its functional conditions. These works include the construction of a perimeter fence, an access platform to the breakwaters, the installation of an entrance gate, a water storage tank, and the rehabilitation of offices, camps, and internal roads.

The Secretary of Public Works, Pedro Cepeda Anaya, stated that these actions are part of a strategy to transform the North Port into a logistics platform capable of attracting investment and generating new growth opportunities for the region. He explained that the project aims to strengthen Tamaulipas’ competitiveness through modern and functional infrastructure.

State authorities believe the port’s geographic location offers a significant advantage for national and international trade. Situated in Matamoros, near the U.S. border, the port complex has the potential to facilitate the movement of goods to various markets and strengthen trade relations between Mexico and North America.

The project is also part of a broader vision to boost economic development in northeastern Mexico. Several experts have indicated that Puerto Norte could become a key hub for activities related to the automotive industry, hydrocarbon transportation, steel shipments, and other export goods.

In addition to the economic benefits, the project aims to generate direct and indirect employment in the region. During the construction phase, specialized workers in various fields are participating, while the port’s future operation will require personnel for logistics, administrative, and transportation activities.

Puerto Norte has a long history. Although the project was proposed by previous administrations, it was only recently that significant progress was made toward its operational launch. In August 2025, operations formally began, an event considered by state authorities to be a historic moment for Tamaulipas and for Mexican maritime trade.

According to official information, this infrastructure aims to position Tamaulipas as one of the country’s main gateways for goods. It will also complement the activity of other strategic ports in the Gulf of Mexico and strengthen supply chains related to nearshoring, which has driven new investment to northern Mexico.

State authorities maintain that the ongoing construction is essential to guarantee the port’s efficient and safe operation. They also emphasize that the infrastructure will contribute to improved regional connectivity and boost economic development in Matamoros and other nearby municipalities.
