Former mayor of Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, José Alberto Martínez, a member of the Popular Revolutionary Front (FPR) and son of Tomás Martínez, a prominent figure in the organization in the Sierra Sur region who was murdered in 2020, survived an armed attack in which one member of his security detail was killed. Martínez was wounded, as was one of his bodyguards.

The Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) reported that the attack occurred on Federal Highway 175, near the San Juan Bosco intersection in Miahuatlán. The FPR leadership stated that during the attack, the former mayor was shot three times and taken to a hospital; his condition was unknown at the time of publication.

They indicated that Juan José Cruz Padilla, one of the bodyguards assigned to the former mayor as part of the precautionary measures following his father’s murder, was wounded; however, he died minutes later.

The FPR claimed that they recently requested the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) to increase protection for Martínez, but the institution refused the request, and security was not reinforced.

The Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office confirmed that, in addition to the former mayor, his bodyguard, who was wounded by gunfire, was also admitted to the same hospital.

Following the attack, the FGEO initiated the corresponding protocols and deployed a team of forensic experts to begin the investigation. The state security cabinet also conducted an operation in the area.

This was the second attack in Miahuatlán in the last ten days. On June 11, the acting mayor, César Figueroa, was attacked and shot in the arm, while a second person accompanying him was hospitalized.
