With the aim of expanding the reach of the My First Rent Program, the Governing Board of the Jalisco Housing Institute (IJALVI) approved adjustments to the operating rules, extending the age range for participants to 20 to 29 years old. Registration requirements were also made more flexible.
The Governing Board unanimously approved the proposal to make these adjustments to the operating rules, changes that took effect after their publication in the official state newspaper, El Estado de Jalisco.
“It is necessary to adjust the current operating rules to broaden the program’s reach, allowing the inclusion of the 25-29 age group, streamlining the eligibility criteria process, and strengthening the program’s access, monitoring, and evaluation mechanisms, ultimately benefiting the target population,” the document states.
On March 30, 2026, the operating rules for the “My First Rent” program were published. Through this program, the Government of the State of Jalisco, via the Jalisco Housing Institute (IJALVI), offers financial support of 2,500 pesos per month for six months, with the option to extend it for two more, to young people seeking independence and living away from their parents’ home who earn up to two minimum monthly wages.
In total, the program aims to benefit 1,100 young people in 2026.
Luis Guillermo Medrano Barba, Director General of IJALVI, explained that initially, this support would be for young people aged 20 to 24 residing in Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, and San Pedro Tlaquepaque.
The platform began operating in early May, and the first applications were received. It was observed that young people from other municipalities requested support, so an initial modification was made to benefit more people, expanding the number of participating municipalities to seven with the addition of Tonalá, El Salto, and Puerto Vallarta. According to INEGI (the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography), these municipalities have the next highest concentration of this age group after the first four.
Similarly, upon receiving applications from young people aged 24 to 29, the possibility of meeting the demand was reviewed, along with facilitating their compliance with the documentary requirement of proving they are renting a home.
In this regard, it was approved that a simple contract, signed by both the tenant and landlord, along with the identification of both parties, can serve as proof of rental.
“This is a pilot program. We are making adjustments as needed, based on demand and feedback from those who register. We expect it to be fully utilized and that by 2027 we can expand it to serve more people,” said Medrano Barba.
