“Mexico: Champion of Disappearances!” — Searchers protest again ahead of Mexico vs. Czechia match.

Ahead of the Mexican national team’s match against the Czech Republic, searchers—people looking for their missing loved ones—staged another protest on Paseo de la Reforma Avenue to raise awareness about the disappearance crisis in Mexico.

Chanting “Join us, join us—it could be your child!” and “Mexico: champion of disappearances!”, they highlighted that there are over 135,000 missing persons in the country.

In front of the “Glorieta de los Desaparecidos” (Roundabout of the Disappeared), searching mothers and activist collectives held an informal soccer match “for memory and against oblivion.”

Additionally, the “searching axolotl” figure wore a duck mask, following President Claudia Sheinbaum’s invitation to the National Palace for “Marlín”—the duck serving as the World Cup ambassador for Mexico City.

“Do I have to dress up as a duck to get the president to notice us?” the “searching axolotl” asked on a sign.

According to figures shared by the collectives and searching mothers, there were more than 133,000 missing or unlocated persons in Mexico as of April of this year.
