Héctor Méndez, the Mexican rescuer known as “Topo Mayor” (Chief Mole), recounted that during rescue operations in Venezuela, a Venezuelan journalist asked him to publicly thank Delcy Rodríguez while being filmed.
😤But his response was blunt. He made it clear that he was not there to engage in politics or follow anyone’s script:
🗣️”I am not a politician; I am a rescuer, a volunteer, a member of civil society.”
😡Topo Mayor stated that he was annoyed because, in the midst of a tragedy—with rescuers exhausted and people trapped under the rubble—someone would try to tell him what to say on camera.
⚠️He also mentioned that he later spoke to the journalist’s superior and apologized for his strong reaction, yet he stood his ground: no rescuer should be used to boost a government official’s image.
🚨Because in an emergency, the priority isn’t currying favor with those in power.
🤝What matters is searching, rescuing, helping, and saving lives.
In those moments, political parties, official titles, and government rhetoric shouldn’t matter. All that matters are the victims, the families, and the people working their hearts out amidst the rubble.
🧐Do you think it is appropriate, in the midst of a tragedy, to ask a rescuer to publicly thank a political figure?
