While the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) Continues Expanding Its Operations and Connectivity, Another Airport Project Is Moving Forward in Mexico
It is the new terminal at Tepic–Riviera Nayarit International Airport, a project that promises to transform the state’s air connectivity and establish it as one of the main gateways to Mexico’s Pacific coast.

According to federal and state authorities, construction has already surpassed 84% completion and includes an unprecedented expansion of its facilities to accommodate international flights from the United States, Canada, and even Europe.
The Airport Terminal Is Expected to Handle 4 Million Passengers
According to the Government of Nayarit, the new terminal is projected to serve up to 4 million passengers annually.
What the New Pacific Airport Terminal Will Be Like

The project includes extending the runway to nearly 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) in length, as well as expanding the terminal building from 2,500 square meters to 60,000 square meters. It will also feature a new 43-meter-high control tower.
Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez and Nayarit Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro led a presentation of the project, highlighting that the new airport will strengthen tourism, investment, and connectivity throughout the state.
A New Airport Terminal Is Being Built in Nayarit
The confirmed international routes include flights to:
- Houston, operated by United Airlines
- Los Angeles, operated by Volaris
- Calgary, with service scheduled to begin later this year through WestJet
The modernization project represents an investment of 4.134 billion pesos, and once completed, the airport will be able to serve up to 4 million passengers per year, according to official estimates.
As part of the project, authorities also introduced the Nua Exprés ground transportation system, designed to connect the airport with Nayarit’s main tourist destinations, as well as Wixárika Indigenous communities, coffee-growing regions, and beach destinations.
The New Terminal Will Feature a 43-Meter Control Tower
The airport’s new infrastructure includes a 43-meter-high control tower, according to the Government of Nayarit.
Nayarit Aims to Become the “Mexican Dubai”
In addition to the new terminal, the state government plans complementary infrastructure projects to boost tourism and business throughout the region.
The governor stated that the goal is to transform Nayarit into the “Mexican Dubai,” with a projected mixed investment of approximately 180 billion pesos over the next eight years to develop:
- 4,500 high-value residential homes
- A marina
- Navigation canals
- An industrial park linked to the airport
- New cargo handling facilities
According to Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA), between January and April of this year, Tepic Airport handled more than 91,000 passengers, reflecting growth in both domestic and international flights. Passenger traffic is expected to increase further once the new terminal begins operations.
