Durango plans to improve public transportation in La Laguna

After acknowledging deficiencies and delays in the public transportation system in the Laguna Region, the Governor of Durango, Esteban Villegas, announced progress in the strategy for modernizing and improving a service fundamental to the mobility of citizens.

On the topic that “we absolutely have to address it,” the state leader expressed his willingness to delve deeper into the corresponding analysis and, as a first step, hold talks with the unions involved.

“The transportation in the Laguna Region is old; it’s transportation that doesn’t have air conditioning, and frankly, in this area, not having air conditioning on the buses is a death sentence.”

The Governor of Durango reported on the possible paths forward for an initiative that strengthens its foundations and that the Laguna community has been demanding for many years.

What changes would be made?

Regarding the buses, the first step emphasized reaching out to the concession holders to propose financing alternatives for the purchase of new, modern units that are in line with the city’s growth.

Regarding taxis, he highlighted the regularization of those operating without proper permits as a priority, a problem not only detected in the La Laguna region but also in Durango City.

“There are unlicensed taxis, taxis without license plates; there is chaos in the transportation sector.”

Mapping to Bring Order

As part of these efforts, the General Secretariat of the Government, headed by Héctor Eduardo Vela Valenzuela, is currently developing a mapping project. They hope to begin bringing order to the system this month throughout the state.

This will also allow them to identify areas where more public transportation license plates are needed in order to issue permits, but primarily to bring order to the system.

He also emphasized that he will foster closer ties with Coahuila to explore ways to improve service for citizens who must travel daily between municipalities in Durango and those in the neighboring state. He even did not rule out implementing a system similar to the Mexico City metropolitan area to benefit users.

He made it clear that the current units are in line with the needs of municipalities such as Gómez Palacio and Lerdo.
