United Kingdom Issues Travel Advisory for Michoacán Ahead of Mexico vs. England Match
The United Kingdom Government has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Michoacán due to ongoing security concerns, just days before the World Cup match between Mexico and England.
On its official website, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all non-essential travel to Michoacán, warning that visitors could be exposed to security risks.
Mexican States Included in the UK Travel Advisory
The United Kingdom currently advises against non-essential travel to ten Mexican states, including Michoacán. The other states listed are:

- Baja California
- Chihuahua
- Sinaloa
- Tamaulipas
- Zacatecas
- Guanajuato
- Colima
- Guerrero
- Chiapas
According to the advisory, these recommendations apply before, during, and after the soccer match.
Morelia and Pátzcuaro Are Exempt From the Advisory
The cities of Morelia and Pátzcuaro, along with their surrounding roads, are exempt from the UK travel advisory.
This includes the highway connecting Morelia to Francisco J. Múgica International Airport, located in the municipality of Álvaro Obregón.
In Pátzcuaro, the exemptions also cover access via toll highways 14D and 15D, which connect the town with Morelia. Boat transportation on Lake Pátzcuaro to islands such as Janitzio, La Pacanda, Tecuena, Urandén, and Yunuén is also included within the exempted travel areas.
The advisory also excludes Federal Highway 15D, commonly known as the Autopista de Occidente (Western Highway), which connects Mexico City and Guadalajara and passes through municipalities including Ecuandureo, Maravatío, Morelia, Panindícuaro, Zinapécuaro, and Zitácuaro.
Mexican Tourism Officials Say Travel Advisories Have Not Reduced Tourism

The United States also maintains an active travel advisory for parts of Mexico.
In response, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, stated that these advisories have not discouraged international visitors traveling to Mexico for the World Cup or other occasions.
She said:
“All countries issue travel advisories. I want to tell you that these advisories worry you more than they worry tourists, because international tourism continues to increase.”
Travelers May Not Be Covered by Insurance
Both the United Kingdom and England have warned that anyone who chooses to travel despite the advisory does so at their own risk.
They also noted that travel insurance policies may not provide coverage if travelers experience incidents in areas where official travel advisories recommend against non-essential travel.
