Guelaguetza 2026 Festivities Begin This Wednesday

This Wednesday marks the beginning of the Guelaguetza 2026 festivities. State authorities presented the latest updates on the organization of Oaxaca’s largest cultural celebration, highlighting that between July 17 and July 27, more than 149,000 tourists are expected to visit. The event is projected to generate an economic impact of over 668 million pesos, with an average hotel occupancy rate of 83%.

During the press conference, the head of the Secretariat of Tourism announced that, in addition to the main Guelaguetza events, thematic conferences will be held every Thursday to present the festival’s schedule and highlight the communities participating in the various cultural fairs.

She explained that the goal is to extend the economic benefits to municipalities surrounding Oaxaca City, allowing tourism to generate income not only in the capital but also in communities across the state.

More Than 140 Cultural Activities Scheduled

Authorities announced that the 94th edition of the Guelaguetza will feature more than 140 cultural, artistic, and traditional events throughout July, reinforcing its status as one of Mexico’s most important cultural and tourism celebrations.

Oaxaca Reports Growth in Air Connectivity

Officials also presented an update on Oaxaca’s air connectivity during the first four months of 2026.

According to official figures, the state’s four airports recorded 5,515 accumulated flights, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Authorities attributed this growth to the Tourism Secretariat’s ongoing promotional strategy, which has strengthened both domestic and international air connectivity.

They also reported a 31% increase in international flight frequencies and a 25% increase in international passengers, driven by the launch of new routes and additional flights to various destinations.

As a result, 44,744 new airline seats were added, allowing a total of 1,550,363 passengers to travel through Oaxaca’s airports during the first four months of the year, reflecting continued growth in the state’s tourism industry.

“Safe Guelaguetza 2026” Security Operation

The Oaxaca State Government announced the implementation of the “Safe Guelaguetza 2026” security operation, which will involve coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local authorities to ensure the safety of both visitors and residents during the holiday season.

The official launch of the operation will take place on July 1 at 9:00 a.m. at the Guelaguetza Auditorium.

According to officials, the operation aims to protect public safety, manage the large influx of tourists, and ensure the orderly development of all scheduled events throughout the month.

Traditional Processions to Mark the Beginning of the Celebration

As part of the cultural traditions that announce the start of Oaxaca’s most important festival, the Secretariat of Tourism confirmed the organization of three traditional convites (parades).

The first convite will take place on July 2, beginning at 4:00 p.m., traveling from the Xochimilco Aqueduct to the Plaza de la Danza. It will feature the Band of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, along with delegations representing Villa de Zaachila, Tlacolula de Matamoros, San Hipólito, Puerto Escondido, Juchitán de Morelos, and other communities.

The second convite will be held on July 10, while the third is scheduled for July 11. Both will begin at 6:00 p.m., departing from Cruz de Piedra and ending at Alameda de León, bringing together traditional delegations and cultural groups that will fill Oaxaca City’s Historic Center with music, dance, and vibrant colors.

Chiapas to Participate as Special Guest State

Authorities also announced that this year’s Guelaguetza will feature the State of Chiapas as a special guest as part of a cultural exchange aimed at strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two states.

As part of this collaboration, the Convite Chiapas will be held on July 19. The parade will conclude at the Metropolitan Cathedral Plaza and will serve as the prelude to the opening of Casa Chiapas, an exhibition space that will be installed at the Margarita Maza Public Library, where visitors will be able to experience the cultural, artisanal, and gastronomic heritage of the neighboring state.
