The city council will develop a tourism project at the Santiago Dam, which borders the state of Durango. The project will include the construction of a dock, restrooms, barbecue grills, and other attractions, with an investment of 400,000 pesos.

Ulises Nájera de Lira, the local Secretary of Government, explained that for the past five years, people have been coming to the dam for family gatherings, and this influx will be leveraged to boost tourism.

“The area is already full of families, but now we want to equip it with amenities so people can simply arrive and relax,” he explained.

He detailed that the project includes tables, barbecue grills, restrooms, and even a dock, “so people can safely cross almost to the middle of the dam.”

Additionally, a suspension bridge is planned for the dam’s spillway, similar to those built in other municipalities such as Teúl de González Ortega.

At the same time, reforestation of the area with native species such as mesquite and poplar trees is being considered “to enhance its beauty, because people have made the space their own on a daily basis,” the local official emphasized.

Regarding safety, the Secretary of Government of Miguel Auza assured that they are working together with the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination (CMPC), since there have been deaths from swimming while intoxicated, although he did not specify how many.

“We have to review the protocols with Civil Protection, because there have been deaths in the past,” he acknowledged.

For now, he shared that in this first phase of the project, construction has begun on three of the twelve modules, while the restrooms will be installed in September.

“We want to provide better conditions for the people who visit, and we want everything to be ready by the beginning of next year,” Nájera de Lira affirmed.
