Most of Mazatlán’s beaches are currently unsafe for swimming

The strong waves along the municipality’s coastline have placed 90% of its beaches under hazardous conditions. As a result, the Aquatic Rescue Squad is urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution and follow lifeguards’ instructions to prevent accidents.

Identified Areas

Rescue personnel explained that sea conditions are highly variable and that, although some areas are considered calmer, wave behavior can change at any moment, making it necessary to adjust safety recommendations for visitors along the coast.

As of yesterday, authorities acknowledged that only small sections of beach offered relatively favorable conditions for entering the water. However, they clarified that even these areas contain natural hazards that require constant monitoring and strict adherence to instructions issued by rescue personnel.

Among the swimming areas with the best conditions are Playa Pinos, the Monument to the Fisherman area, and part of the Sábalo beach area. However, officials emphasized that none of these locations are completely free of risk, as some sections contain rock jetties and other hazards that may endanger swimmers.

In contrast, they noted that much of the coastline—especially the northern area, Cerritos, Zona Dorada, Pueblo Bonito, and other sectors currently displaying the red warning flag—faces dangerous conditions caused by the intense surf. Authorities recommend avoiding entering the water in these areas.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Despite the strong waves currently affecting Mazatlán’s beaches, tourists continue arriving at the resort city to enjoy its natural attractions, while remaining aware that sea conditions require extra caution during their stay.

Ramiro Ruiz Marrero, a visitor from the state of Chihuahua, arrived with his entire family and said that although the sea is rougher than usual, it has not prevented them from enjoying their vacation.

While walking along the beach, Ruiz Marrero commented that he found the scenery pleasant and attractive for visitors. However, he acknowledged that the heavy surf has significantly changed the usual conditions of the coastline.

“It’s nice and beautiful; it’s just that the sea is pretty rough and choppy,” he said while describing the ocean conditions during his visit.

He explained that these conditions require tourists to act responsibly by avoiding getting too close to the shoreline and remaining alert to the movement of the water to prevent any accidents.

Impact on Local Businesses

The strong waves that have affected Mazatlán’s beaches for several days not only pose a risk to swimmers but have also caused economic losses for vendors working along the federal beach zone, who report a significant decline in tourist attendance and, consequently, in their sales.

Erika, a vendor who sells her products daily on the beach, said that current sea conditions have made her work considerably more difficult, as the heavy surf reduces the amount of usable beach space and discourages visitors from spending time on the shore.

She explained that working under these conditions has become increasingly difficult because the waves cover much of the beach, limiting the areas where tourists traditionally gather and where vendors normally offer their products.
