Jesus, Jessica Monserrat, and José Gabriel will spend several years in prison after being caught extorting more than 28,000 pesos from tourists.

The incident occurred a few days ago when these Tourist Police officers stopped some visitors for alleged traffic violations and public urination, threatening to confiscate their passports and car unless they paid $1,400.

The victims paid but immediately filed a complaint. The Cancun government then reviewed the officers’ recently installed body cameras.

The footage showed the officers first taking the tourists to an ATM to withdraw part of the money.
The Cancun City Council initially dismissed the officers and initiated legal proceedings against them. Today, the Quintana Roo Attorney General announced they will seek a 25-year prison sentence to serve as an example to other traffic officers and encouraged citizens who have been victims of extortion to file a complaint. But two other officers are also facing charges for not wearing their body cameras, as they are currently required by law to have these devices turned on at all times to monitor their actions.

Meanwhile, another officer was arrested for extorting a bribe from a tourist using a bank terminal.
