The Mexico City government reported that five people died during activities related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a figure higher than the four deaths previously reported by authorities.
Local Health Secretary Nadine Gasman stated at a press conference that five deaths had been recorded in the capital since the start of the World Cup on June 11.
This figure contrasts with the four deaths reported by the city government last week following celebrations of Mexico’s victory over Ecuador.
During her remarks, Gasman did not specify the circumstances of the fifth death or clarify whether it was a previously unreported case or an update to the official count.
The official also reported that, since the start of the tournament, authorities provided 3,563 medical services and carried out 93 hospital transfers.
In this regard, Gasman presented a summary of medical services classified by triage levels and color-coded system. She noted that 3,438 non-serious cases were registered, classified as green, 109 requiring medical attention (red), and 11 considered serious with priority for transfer (yellow).
“And (black), which represents the deceased: five regrettable deaths,” she mentioned.
The Head of Government, Clara Brugada, again expressed her condolences to the families of those who died during last week’s celebrations, but again did not specify the number of victims.
“I express once again my condolences and my full solidarity with the families of those who tragically died last Tuesday. We continue to support them,” she assured.
However, she stated that yesterday’s events, for the Mexico-England match, “concluded without incident.”
Last week, Mexico City authorities confirmed the deaths of four people following celebrations for Mexico’s victory over Ecuador near the Angel of Independence monument.
Three died of asphyxiation during the crowds on Paseo de la Reforma, and a fourth person later died in a hospital after being transported from the celebration area.
This Monday, the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office reported that it is continuing its investigation into the fourth death, that of 19-year-old Isaías Trejo, and indicated that it is not ruling out the possible commission of other crimes related to the case.
On March 28, a fan died after falling from the VIP box at Azteca Stadium, the day it was reopened in preparation for the World Cup.
The Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security reported that the man was intoxicated.
