The modernization of the San Pedro Pochutla-Santa María Huatulco section of the Salina Cruz-Zihuatanejo highway, being carried out by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), has reached 59.84 percent completion, with 15.32 kilometers of its total 25.6-kilometer target completed.

The Oaxaca Center reported that the project involves widening the road from 7.0 to 12.0 meters through earthworks, drainage works, paving with a hydraulic base, asphalt base, and asphalt concrete surface, as well as the installation of horizontal and vertical signage, with the aim of providing a safer, more efficient, and modern road.

It explained that this modernization will reduce the level of marginalization in various communities in the coastal region of Oaxaca by significantly improving the highway’s service level and providing faster and safer conditions for the transport of people and goods.

Furthermore, he explained that it will strengthen connectivity with one of the country’s most important tourist destinations, consolidating the Bays of Huatulco as a national and international benchmark.

He specified that the project will reduce travel time from 50 to 20 minutes, generate 2,000 direct jobs and 4,000 indirect jobs, and directly benefit 99,066 residents of the municipalities of San Pedro Pochutla and Santa María Huatulco.

Given this, he recommended that users consult schedules and alternate routes before starting their trip, pay attention to warning signs, and follow the instructions of construction personnel at all times to ensure the modernization work continues safely and to safeguard the well-being of those traveling through the area, as special traffic schedules remain in effect.
