Throughout July, Oaxaca’s cultural calendar is filled with activities celebrating the rich traditions of its communities as part of the Guelaguetza, the state’s most important festival, where dance, music, gastronomy, and handicrafts take center stage.
One of the most anticipated events of the season is the Wool Rug Fair, held in Teotitlán del Valle, a community renowned for preserving one of Oaxaca’s most important textile traditions.
Teotitlán Rugs: A Cultural Heritage Recognized Worldwide
Teotitlán del Valle is internationally recognized for the production of wool textiles.

In this community, artisans produce rugs and carpets on traditional wooden pedal looms, as well as sarapes, handbags, curtains, and other handcrafted items using techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
As visitors walk through the town, it is common to find family-run workshops where they can observe the rug-making process firsthand and appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication required to create each piece.
Every year, Teotitlán del Valle organizes two craft fairs to promote its artisan traditions: the first during the Easter holiday season and the second during the Guelaguetza celebrations.

When and Where Will the Wool Rug Fair Take Place?
The 2026 Teotitlán del Valle Wool Rug Fair, held as part of the Guelaguetza celebrations, will take place from July 16 through July 31 at the Municipal Market.
During this period, visitors can explore the exhibition daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Throughout the two-week event, attendees will have the opportunity to watch demonstrations of the traditional techniques used to create the famous wool rugs, admire their colorful designs, and learn about the weaving and dyeing methods that use natural dyes.
In addition to the well-known handwoven rugs produced on wooden pedal looms, visitors will also find wallets, handbags, textile accessories, and a wide variety of handcrafted products created by families from the community.
Visiting the Wool Rug Fair is an opportunity to purchase a unique handcrafted piece made by Oaxacan artisans while learning about the tradition that has brought international recognition to Teotitlán del Valle, one of Oaxaca’s most iconic artisan communities.
