During the first six months of the year, 435 people were murdered in the state of Veracruz.
On average, 2.4 homicides have been committed daily in Veracruz, according to the daily report of intentional homicides generated by an interdisciplinary team led by the Secretariat of Citizen Security of the federal government.
When compiling a monthly count, April, with 85 murders, January, with 83, and March, with 76, were the months with the highest number of homicides.
The daily report of intentional homicides is generated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the Secretariat of National Defense, the Secretariat of the Navy, and the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.
TWO DECADES OF VIOLENCE
In January, 83 homicides were registered in various regions of the state; in February, the number reached 68 murders; while in March, the total reached 79.
In April, the figure was 85 murders; In May, 70 people died violently; and in June, the number dropped to 50.
Veracruz has been mired in violence related to drug cartel operations for two decades. Currently, according to civil authorities, at least six criminal groups operate in the state: the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the Sinaloa Cartel, the Gulf Cartel, Grupo Sombra, the Old School Zetas, and the Northeast Cartel.
With fluctuations over the years, violence persists in various regions of the state. For example, this year three Veracruz journalists have been murdered: Roxana Ramírez, in the municipality of Nanchital; and Carlos Castro and Luis Ángel López, in Poza Rica.
