The Government of Guanajuato announced that San Miguel de Allende has once again been ranked the best city in the world this year in the World’s Best Awards 2026 by Travel + Leisure magazine, a publication specializing in tourism and recognized internationally.
For Guanajuato authorities, this recognition reflects the preference of thousands of international travelers who distinguish San Miguel de Allende for its experiences, its historical and architectural heritage, its cultural richness, its gastronomy, its wine tourism offerings, and the hospitality of its people.
“This new designation as the World’s Best City confirms the extraordinary moment San Miguel de Allende is experiencing, the result of coordinated work between tourism service providers, business owners, authorities, and the community, who have consolidated a development model based on quality, authenticity, and the preservation of its identity,” the state government stated.
Why is it being named the world’s best city again in 2026?
According to the 31st edition of Travel + Leisure magazine’s World’s Best Awards, San Miguel de Allende was once again named the world’s best city in 2026, receiving top honors from the most discerning travelers. It is recognized for its combination of history, culture, and contemporary sophistication.
Furthermore, they added, what defines this city is its atmosphere: “a magnetic blend of tradition and global influence.”
“Creatives, foodies, and romantics are drawn to San Miguel de Allende from all over the world, adding a cosmopolitan touch to the city’s authentic Mexican character,” says Zachary Rabinor, advisor for the ranking.

After the announcement, the Guanajuato government also highlighted that San Miguel de Allende now boasts five titles as “best city in the world” awarded by Travel + Leisure magazine.
They assert that this makes it one of the most awarded cities in the history of the World’s Best Awards, positioning it as one of the most prestigious and enduring destinations in one of the most influential international tourism rankings.
“For Guanajuato, this recognition represents an opportunity to strengthen the state’s international profile, boost the arrival of national and international visitors, and continue positioning the state as a competitive, diverse, and world-class destination,” added Guanajuato authorities.
