In Oaxaca, 83 reforestation projects are underway across 6,825 hectares with an investment of 250.5 million pesos. Of these, 78 projects (covering 6,666 hectares and representing 250 million pesos) are located in the Chocho-Mixtec region, stated the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), Alicia Bárcena Ibarra.

In the Mixtec community of Tepelmeme Villa de Morelos, during a visit as part of the 2026 National Reforestation Campaign, Bárcena Ibarra reiterated that the campaign held this Thursday is part of a national forest restoration strategy by the Mexican government, encompassing 2,328 projects across 151,640.61 hectares.

She explained that these efforts strengthen actions to protect forests, which are essential for the life, identity, and prosperity of communities.

The work is being carried out with Mixtec people from Oaxaca who are reforesting this area in an organized manner through the Alliance of Chocho-Mixtec Communities, “which serves as a national example for the care of these Oaxacan lands,” federal officials acknowledged.

The director of the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), Sergio Humberto Graf Montero, highlighted Oaxaca’s commitment to combating forest fires and preserving these resources. He stated that this year, reforestation efforts will be undertaken in 24,000 hectares of priority regions across the country, 1,500 of which will be in the Chocho-Mixtec region.

The ecological restoration work carried out by the Alliance of Chocho-Mixtec Communities over the past 25 years, covering more than 25,000 hectares, was recognized. In coordination with Conafor, they will receive support for an additional 7,000 hectares.

Awards were presented for the work being done, and 3,000 trees of four species—pine, juniper, agave, and ramón—were planted across 4 hectares.

As part of the Arbor Day celebration, the importance of caring for the state’s forest resources was highlighted, emphasizing the collective commitment of the communities through the tequio, an ancestral practice of working for the common good that is distinctive of the people of Oaxaca.

Later, in a press release, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) indicated that Oaxaca has distinguished itself as one of the leading states in the production of plants for reforestation. In 2023, 8.5 million trees were produced; in 2024, 10.6 million; in 2025, 10.8 million; and this year the goal is to reach 17 million to continue supporting communities in the care of their natural resources.
