With the first two phases of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic plant now fully operational, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño is consolidating a solar energy system to directly benefit Sonoran families by generating revenue that translates into savings on their electricity bills. This outcome is part of the implementation of the Sonora Plan.
The Governor explained that the operation of these two phases of the photovoltaic plant provides electricity to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), and the resulting revenue is invested to maintain the electricity subsidy during the summer season in all 72 municipalities of Sonora.
He emphasized that 1.75 billion pesos are being allocated this year to sustain the electricity subsidy in Sonora, ensuring greater certainty for users thanks to the clean energy generated by the Puerto Peñasco plant.
Currently, phases 3 and 4 are under construction, and once completed, this plant will contribute to achieving the goal of 38 percent electricity generation from clean sources by 2030.
This scheme represents a significant shift in the use of natural energy sources, as the subsidy now has a more stable source of funding, coming directly from the revenue generated by the photovoltaic plant.
This strategic project, promoted with the support of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has an investment of $1.64 billion, and its infrastructure is being developed in four stages. Work on the site was carried out in 2023 by the Planning Department; In 2024, Phase 1, with a capacity of 120 megawatts, will be operational; in 2025, Phase 2, with a capacity of 300 megawatts, will be completed; in 2026, Phase 3 will generate 300 megawatts; and in 2027, Phase 4, with a capacity of 280 megawatts, will be operational.
The Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic plant will generate one gigawatt when all four phases are operational, making it one of the largest in Latin America.
