78.9% feel unsafe in Acapulco, 81.4% in Chilpancingo, and 57.3% in Zihuatanejo.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported that in June, the percentage of people who felt unsafe in Acapulco remained at 78.9%. In Chilpancingo, the figure decreased from 83.8% in March to 81.4%, while in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo it dropped from 68.2% to 57.3%.

However, the results of the second quarter of 2026 National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) indicate that, at the national level, Chilpancingo moved from eighth to seventh place among the cities with the highest perception of insecurity compared to the previous quarter. Acapulco moved from 16th to 11th place, while Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo improved from 35th to 51st place out of the 91 urban areas evaluated.

Compared with June of last year, the perception of insecurity decreased in Acapulco, from 83.4% to 78.9%. In Chilpancingo, it increased from 80.2% to 81.4%, while in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo it fell from 74.5% to 57.3%.

Changes in Perception of Insecurity

The executive summary of the results highlights that Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo was one of 18 urban areas with statistically significant changes in the percentage of residents aged 18 and older who perceived public insecurity between March and June, recording a 16% decrease. At the opposite ends of the chart were San Pedro Garza García, with a 140.9% increase, and Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, with a 25.6% decrease.

Perception of Government Effectiveness

Regarding residents’ perception of their local government’s effectiveness in solving the city’s main problems, only 18.8% of respondents in Acapulco considered the government effective, down from 20.7% in the first-quarter report. Acapulco ranked 81st, just ten places above Cuautitlán Izcalli, the lowest-rated city, with 12.4%.

In Chilpancingo, only 22.9% of residents perceived the local government as effective in addressing problems, similar to 22.8% in the previous quarter, placing the city 70th. Meanwhile, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo ranked seventh, with 54.6%, compared to 50.4% previously. Ciudad del Carmen ranked first nationwide with 63.4%, while the national average stood at 30.8%.

Crime Victimization

The survey also reported the percentage of households with at least one victim of robbery, extortion, or fraud:

  • Chilpancingo: 33.1%
  • Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: 27.2%
  • Acapulco: 25.5%

National Results

Nationwide, 59.8% of the population considered it unsafe to live in their city. The figure was 65.6% among women and 52.6% among men, representing a slight decrease compared to March.

Seven out of ten people reported feeling unsafe at ATMs located on public streets, while six out of ten felt unsafe on the streets and on public transportation.

Expectations for Public Safety

According to the survey:

  • 32.8% of respondents believed public security conditions would remain the same over the next 12 months.
  • 24.3% believed they would worsen.

Conflicts and Confrontations

Nationwide, 40.2% of the population experienced conflicts or confrontations during the second quarter, whether directly or with family members, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, employees of establishments, or government authorities.

The percentages by city were:

  • Acapulco: increased from 30.0% in March to 30.5% in June.
  • Chilpancingo: increased from 34.5% to 37.1%.
  • Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: decreased from 28.9% to 23.3%.
