Heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts during the early hours of Tuesday in Culiacán, Sinaloa, caused by the effects of Hurricane Genevieve and the Mexican monsoon, resulted in a large sinkhole following the collapse of a high-capacity pipeline. The storms also disrupted the city’s drinking water supply and brought down trees and palm trees in several neighborhoods.
Rubí Collector Collapses, Federalismo Avenue Closed
The Municipal Water and Sewer Board of Culiacán (JAPAC) reported that the collapse occurred along Federalismo Avenue, where the 72-inch Rubí collector pipeline was damaged. The incident forced authorities to completely close the roadway while repair work is underway.
Officials warned that the repairs are expected to continue for most of the day to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
Power Outage Disrupts Water Service in Southern Neighborhoods
The severe weather also affected the city’s drinking water system. The San Lorenzo Water Treatment Plant lost electrical power for several hours due to the heavy rain and strong winds, interrupting water service to multiple neighborhoods in southern Culiacán.
Additionally, debris carried by the Tamazula River clogged the intake structure at the Juan de Dios Bátiz Water Treatment Plant, causing low water pressure in neighborhoods in the northeastern part of the city while JAPAC crews worked to remove the obstruction.
Fallen Trees and Palm Trees Reported Across the City
The Municipal Civil Protection Coordination reported that four trees and one palm tree fell in various parts of the city, primarily in the Villas del Río and Valle Alto residential developments, as well as the Plutarco Elías Calles and Chapultepec neighborhoods.
Authorities also inspected canals and streams, which were reported to be operating at approximately 50% of their capacity, with no significant flooding or overflow recorded.
Army and Local Authorities Respond to Storm Damage
Municipal emergency personnel and members of the Mexican Army participated in cleanup operations, assisting with the removal of fallen trees and responding to reports from residents.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions as additional rainfall is forecast and urged the public to avoid traveling through hazardous areas and to follow recommendations issued by Civil Protection.
