On social media, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo faced one of the strongest waves of criticism from the Mexican public since the beginning of her administration.
During Tuesday’s edition of her daily press conference, La Mañanera del Pueblo, the President, together with her Legal Counsel, Luisa María Alcalde, announced a public “consultation” aimed at strengthening what they describe as “Audience Rights.” According to critics, the proposal would establish regulations allowing the government to determine, based on its own criteria, what information is considered true and what is considered “false.”
As soon as the consultation was announced, many social media users strongly criticized the proposal, arguing that it represents one of the most significant modern attempts in Mexico’s history to limit freedom of expression. Numerous users stated that freedom of speech should be defended under all circumstances, regardless of political party, ideology, or affiliation, arguing that a country without freedom of expression has nothing.
Users also recalled a post made by the President in 2014, in which she quoted statements from one of the most prominent opposition figures during the administration of former President Enrique Peña Nieto, criticizing what was described at the time as an attempt to “censor the internet.” Twelve years later, now serving as President, critics argue that those convictions have been left behind by promoting a proposal they view as contrary to freedom of expression.
