Seo Hyun Cecilia Lee Kimes: Proud Mexican Athlete Who Defends Her Identity After Criticism
Seo Hyun Cecilia Lee Kimes faced criticism and had her Mexican identity questioned because of her appearance and the Korean origin of her parents, after winning gold and silver medals while representing Mexico at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
🗣️ Cecilia responded with pride and left no room for doubt: “I was born Mexican. Both of my parents are Korean, but I am truly proud and I am very much from Monterrey. I am very happy to be able to show what Mexico has to offer at these Central American Games.”
📍 Cecilia was born in Nuevo León, grew up, and currently lives in Monterrey. Her parents are originally from South Korea, a family heritage that she proudly embraces, but it does not question her identity: she was born in Mexico, she was raised in Mexico, and she competes with the Mexican flag on her chest.
🥋 She began practicing taekwondo as a child under the guidance of her father, who was a national champion in South Korea.
🏆 With years of discipline and training, the athlete from Monterrey became a two-time world poomsae champion, winning titles in Taipei in 2018 and in Goyang, South Korea, in 2022.
🤯 She also won gold and bronze medals at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, earned gold at the 2024 National Universiade, and obtained two bronze medals at the World University Festival held in South Korea.
🧠 In addition to competing at the highest level, Cecilia studies Clinical and Health Psychology at Tecnológico de Monterrey, is part of Borregos Monterrey, and trains children, with the goal of combining sports with child development and mental health in the future.
🇲🇽 Now she has raised the Mexican flag once again in Santo Domingo 2026. Alongside William Arroyo, she also seeks to pave the way for new generations to compete on even bigger stages.
☝️ Let it be clear: her features do not make her any less Mexican. Her medals, her dedication, and the pride with which she speaks about Mexico make her an outstanding representative of the country.
