Yucatán Launches “Stay in Yucatán” Campaign to Increase Hotel Occupancy During Summer Vacation Period
Due to hotel occupancy not reaching the expected levels during this summer vacation period, the Tourism Development Secretariat of the State Government (Sefotur) launched the emergency campaign “Hospédate en Yucatán” (Stay in Yucatán), a strategy focused on southeastern states of the country in order to increase overnight stays and occupancy rates at the various lodging centers throughout the state.
Business owners from the tourism sector, representatives of general commerce, and tourism authorities from Mérida and Valladolid confirmed that visitor numbers are below the initial projections for the season, mainly due to several factors that have influenced this commercial outlook in recent weeks.
The head of Sefotur, Darío Flota Ocampo, explained that the initiative began a few days ago in coordination with the Mexican Association of Hotels of Yucatán (AMHY) and highlighted that the plan includes special promotions designed exclusively for residents of neighboring states such as Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, and Quintana Roo.
“We launched this campaign together with the Mexican Association of Hotels of Yucatán to offer special deals so that people are encouraged to come to the state,” he stated, while pointing out that through this effort, authorities and the private sector are joining forces to boost the local economy.
Among the causes of the slow start to the vacation season, Flota Ocampo mentioned international-impact events, such as the recent conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, which led many families to choose to remain at home to watch the matches.
He explained that this situation resulted in lower tourist mobility toward destinations in the state. However, with “Hospédate en Yucatán,” he expressed confidence that the current trend can be reversed during the second half of the vacation period.
He noted that the geographical proximity of the targeted states makes travel by land easier, turning Yucatán into an accessible option for travelers from southeastern Mexico.
According to the latest monthly report on tourism activity, Yucatán experienced a slight adjustment in its indicators during the first five months of the year, as during the first half of 2026 there was a -1.6 percent decrease in the arrival of tourists who stayed overnight compared with the same period in 2025.
