Dafne lost her life under suspicious circumstances on July 16 while attending a summer camp at the Marina Doenitz Militarized Academy in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas. Initial accounts provided by academy personnel to the victim’s family claimed the minor suffered a medical collapse or light fall. However, official forensic reports later revealed that the cause of death was asphyxiation by submersion, alongside physical contusions and signs of maltreatment, sparking national outrage.
Protesters filled public squares carrying banners with slogans such as “Dafne was murdered” and demanding the total eradication of abusive practices within unregulated or militarized training institutions. Family members, led by the victim’s mother, Alejandra Quintos, have strongly criticized the pace of the judicial process, urging state and federal authorities to secure preventative detention for all responsible individuals connected to the facility.
The case has ignited a wider political and social debate regarding the supervision of private military-style academies and youth camps across the country.
