President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the construction of Ñuu Tata Health City in Oaxaca—Ñuu Tata means “Healing Town” in the Mixtec language. The project will bring together hospitals operated by IMSS, ISSSTE, and IMSS Bienestar, with the goal of becoming a model for a Universal Health Service that provides free, coordinated care across Mexico’s three main public healthcare institutions.
During an event in San Lorenzo Cacaotepec, Oaxaca, the president said the complex will strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure and allow the three institutions to coordinate specialized medical services to improve patient care.
Sheinbaum explained that the project will include hospitals from all three federal healthcare systems. In addition to the ISSSTE hospital, which she said is 62% complete, she laid the foundation stone for a new IMSS hospital and announced that construction of an IMSS Bienestar hospital will begin later to expand the capacity of the Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso General Hospital.
“Our vision is for these three institutions to become part of what we call the Universal Health Service in Mexico. Here in Ñuu Tata, a state-of-the-art ISSSTE hospital is being built, along with an IMSS hospital, and today I also announce that a new IMSS Bienestar hospital will be built to strengthen the Dr. Aurelio Valdivieso Hospital here in the city of Oaxaca. Three hospitals,” the president said.
Sheinbaum also stated that her administration plans to increase the country’s hospital capacity by 9,000 beds, while criticizing previous administrations.
“They created Seguro Popular, which also built new hospitals that never became operational—about 80 abandoned hospitals that President López Obrador found when he took office,” she said.
Sheinbaum Offers University Opportunities
During her visit to Oaxaca on Saturday, the president also announced that students who are not admitted to the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) will be offered spaces at Rosario Castellanos University.
“Yesterday (Friday), I asked Mario Delgado to work with the rector of Rosario Castellanos University and with other universities, if they wish to participate, so that every student who takes this entrance exam has the opportunity to continue studying instead of being left without a place,” Sheinbaum said.
