Tourism and Business Leaders Say Playa del Carmen Still Faces Challenges in Competitiveness
Representatives of the tourism and business sectors believe that Playa del Carmen continues to face challenges related to tourism promotion, public safety, infrastructure, and competitiveness, while municipal authorities continue reviewing financial matters involving the local administration.
Although the Playa del Carmen City Council has announced several initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism promotion, the destination—led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado—continues to face issues that remain a source of concern for business organizations and the hotel industry.
Industry specialists agree that Playa del Carmen must continue working to:
- Diversify its tourism offerings.
- Improve urban mobility.
- Enhance the city’s image.
- Maintain public infrastructure in optimal condition.
They consider these factors essential for preserving the city’s competitiveness against other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.
Financial Review Continues
The departure of Javier Regalado Hendricks as Municipal Treasurer in May occurred during an ongoing review of the municipality’s public finances and the launch of investigations by the Municipal Comptroller’s Office.
According to information released at the time, authorities received complaints alleging:
- Possible financial irregularities.
- Alleged acts of corruption.
- An alleged extortion network operating within the municipal administration.
These matters remain under review by the appropriate authorities.
Security Concerns Remain
Residents of Playa del Carmen continue to express concern about public safety, particularly regarding crimes such as:

- Commercial robberies.
- Vehicle theft.
- Drug dealing reported in some tourist areas.
Business representatives have also stated that extortion, commonly referred to as “protection payments” (cobro de piso), continues to affect numerous businesses, impacting employment and discouraging new investment.

In response to these challenges, members of the private sector have emphasized the need for stronger and ongoing coordination between government authorities and the business community to maintain visitor confidence and protect the local economy, which depends heavily on tourism.
Just months after the municipality celebrated its 33rd anniversary, tourism industry representatives believe the results of the strategies implemented so far remain limited.
They note that indicators such as:
- Hotel occupancy rates,
- Visitor arrivals,
- And the overall perception of Playa del Carmen as a tourist destination,
will be key measures for evaluating the destination’s performance during the current vacation season.
