Complaints over alleged abuses and possible extortion at the San Roberto checkpoint continue to grow, as frustration increases among motorists traveling through the area.
The latest case was reported by a citizen who said that on Sunday, August 2, he was stopped and inspected by individuals who identified themselves as agents of Mexico’s Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR). According to his account, during the inspection they demanded money because he was not carrying the vehicle’s permit and invoice in physical form. He also claimed that he was treated disrespectfully, insulted, and that his documents were thrown onto the ground.
This incident adds to a series of similar complaints that, according to multiple testimonies, have been reported repeatedly at the same checkpoint.
The question many citizens are asking is: How much longer will the Federal Government ignore what is happening at the San Roberto checkpoint? For many of those affected, it appears that the growing number of complaints has not been enough to prompt an investigation into these allegations or, where appropriate, action in accordance with the law.
Another recurring concern in the testimonies is that, according to those making the complaints, most of the inspections and allegations are directed at Mexican nationals (“paisanos”) traveling from the United States to visit their families in Mexico. This has generated growing concern and outrage among people who regularly use this route.
So far, federal authorities have not issued an official statement regarding this specific case.
