If the United States government seizes assets from drug traffickers—such as in the case of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada—Mexico will request that they be handed over to the country, stated President Claudia Sheinbaum.
She indicated that the national security cabinet or the head of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Ernestina Godoy, could explain the significance of the estimated value of the assets Washington expects to confiscate from Zambada.
“It is not that they have already identified the 15 billion dollars; it is a Department of Justice estimate of the damage ‘El Mayo’ Zambada may have caused throughout the period he operated as a criminal and was involved in drug trafficking,” she said.
She also announced that in the coming days, the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Omar Reyes, will report on the recovery of 500,000 dollars related to the case of Genaro García Luna—the former Secretary of Public Security during Felipe Calderón’s administration—a sum “that we are going to dedicate to a specific purpose.”
